Sanchoen: Buildings & Gardens
Sanchoen is a tea shop that was an minor landlord holding. The old part of the compound was rebuilt in 1818, the tea house was built after a major earthquake in 1896 and various warehouses (kura) and other parts were added at various times. The front building, the shop, was rebuilt about 50 years ago as a joint tea and stationery shop. The red numbers indicate various gardens. The main one, No. 1, is a formal Japanese garden that has been maintained mainly by one person for the past half century.
